Reliance Jio announced Jio 5G roll out by this Diwali: Everything You Should Know.
The 5G auctions for 2022 have concluded, telecom companies have been allocated spectrum, and we now await the rollout of 5G network services in India. Reliance Jio has generated the most excitement among telcos for a pan-India 5G rollout in 2022. Jio is uniquely positioned in the market because it purchased the most advanced 5G spectrum, built its own 5G network stack, and may also support India's 5Gi standard. So, if you're interested in Jio's 5G rollout plans, you've come to the right place. This article has covered the Jio 5G India launch date, its 5G band support, the list of cities where Jio 5G will be available, and so on. On that note, let's get started.
Jio 5G Launch in India : Everything You Should Know
We have summarised everything we know about Reliance Jio's 5G network services in India in this article. We have covered everything in this article, from Jio 5G launch date to 5G band support. Expand the table below and begin with the 5G spectrum purchased by the Indian telcom companies.
Jio 5G Launch Date : Jio 5G Roll out
While Reliance Jio had previously been rumoured to celebrate 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' with a 5G rollout in India, leading us all to believe that Jio 5G services would launch on August 15, 2022, this did not occur. But, thanks to Reliance's 45th AGM, we now have an official release date.
Mukesh Ambani finally announced the launch date of Jio's 5G network at the Reliance AGM 2022. By Diwali 2022, which is expected to be around October 24, Jio 5G network services will be available in key metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
Following that, Jio's 5G network will reach every remote corner of India by December 2023. By the end of next year, the company hopes to have reached at least 1,000 cities with its 5G SA network.
Mukesh Ambani claimed that Jio's 5G rollout plan is the fastest in history, which is commendable. In addition, he stated that Jio will soon be the world's largest and most advanced 5G network.
Cities to Get Jio 5G First by Diwali
As previously stated, Jio has purchased 5G bands for all 22 circles, implying that Jio 5G will be available throughout India. Mukesh Ambani, however, announced at the 45th Reliance AGM that Jio 5G will be initially launched in four metro cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai — during Diwali 2022, which falls in the last week of October.
Following that, Jio 5G will be extended to cities such as Bengaluru, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Jamnagar (if we go by rumours and reports). By December 2023, nearly 1,000 Indian cities, towns, and villages will be served by Jio's 5G network.
We know that Jio has completed 5G coverage planning in over 1,000 cities, so a pan-India rollout is almost certainly on the way. Jio used heat maps, 3D maps, and ray tracing technology to plan coverage based on targeted customer consumption and revenue potential. Furthermore, it has conducted trials for a variety of 5G use cases, including virtual and augmented reality, low-latency cloud gaming, online live TV streaming, and telemedicine.
Do we need a new Jio 5G sim ?
We noticed that none of the Indian telecom operators have announced the requirement for a new 5G SIM card to access the 5G network. So, if you have a Jio 4G SIM, you should be able to use Jio's 5G service without needing to upgrade your SIM. That being said, we are closely monitoring the situation, and if Jio announces a new 5G SIM card policy, we will update the article accordingly.
Jio 5G Download/Upload Speed
So far, Jio has conducted 5G trials in eight cities and has measured varying degrees of 5G speed. According to a recent 91Mobiles report, Jio's 5G trial in Mumbai provided up to 8x faster download speeds than 4G bandwidth. It appears that Jio 5G will offer download speeds of up to 420Mbps and upload speeds of up to 412 Mbps, which is a significant improvement over 4G speeds in India.
The company boasted at the Reliance AGM 2022 that it can deliver speeds of up to 1Gbps indoors using its indigenous network stack, which is impressive. An intriguing aspect of this is that Jio built its own 5G network stack using Open-RAN technology with Radisys and equipment from various vendors.
If the network infrastructure performs on par with other fully-stacked 5G architectures used globally, it will win win for Jio.
Jio 5G Spectrum: Jio 5G Bands In India
Jio purchased 24.7GHz of spectrum in India's 5G auctions from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for Rs 88,078 crores. Jio is the highest bidder because it has the most spectrum in India (26.77 GHz).
Reliance Jio has purchased 5G spectrum in all popular frequency bands, including 700MHz (n28), 800MHz (n5), 1800MHz (n3), 3300MHz (n78), and the premium mmWave 26GHz (n258) bands.
The 700MHz band is the most sought-after band in this case, as it will allow Jio to penetrate rural India and provide low-cost 5G services to the masses. Though not the fastest, this lower band can cover long distances and provides download speeds faster than 4G/LTE to everyone in India. Our linked article contains information on all of the 5G bands that are supported in India.
In the low-band 5G spectrum (also known as sub-GHz), Jio has stated unequivocally that it will provide 5G services throughout India, reaching every last corner of the country. It purchased the 700MHz band across all 22 circles in India, as well as some 800MHz sub-GHz bands in four circles.
"For those who are unfamiliar with telecom circles, the DoT has divided India into 22 circles or geographical areas to facilitate spectrum assignment and communication. Calls within each telecom circle are treated as local, while those outside the zone are treated as long-distance. If a telecom company wants to operate in a specific circle, they must purchase a license/spectrum for that circle through an auction process, which is exactly what happened in India's 5G auction."
Jio purchased at least 2 x 10MHz in the 1800MHz band in six critical circles in the mid-band sub-6GHz frequency band. Aside from that, the company chose 100MHz in the 3300MHz band for all 22 circles, potentially making Jio India's largest 5G telecom operator. Jio, by the way, already has the 2300MHz band in all major circles.
Coming to the mmWave 5G Bands, Jio acquired 1000MHz in the 26GHz frequency band, again in each of the 22 circles, which is simply impressive. The table below contains the complete list of Jio's 5G band allocation.
Jio 5G Plans and Price in India
It is too early to predict Jio's 5G plans and pricing in India. However, given Reliance Jio's competitive practises, we anticipate Jio's 5G plan to cost between Rs 400 and Rs 500 per month. Jio's ARPU (average revenue per user) is currently around Rs 175.
Jio's ARPU will skyrocket in the coming years thanks to 5G services. Keep in mind that Jio may launch a two-tiered 5G plan for sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G services. We hope that the pricing for mid-band 5G services will be reasonable. We will continue to update this article as new information becomes available.
Jio AirFibre
The company announced a one-of-a-kind device at the Reliance Annual General Meeting 2022 that allows you to create a personal Wi-Fi hotspot inside your home using Jio's true SA 5G network and 700MHz frequency band. The best part is that it is completely wireless, and you can place it wherever you want in your home. It's called Jio AirFiber, and you can learn more about it by clicking on the link.
This is an attempt to provide Gigabit speeds to every home and office without the use of a wired fibre connection. Furthermore, this will propel India into the top ten nations in the fixed broadband category, which is one of Jio's major goals. Overall, Jio's seamless solution to provide wireless Gigabit speed by leveraging its end-to-end SA 5G network is impressive. It will also be used to deliver Jio Cloud PCs to households in rural and semi-urban areas, allowing students and workers to use a cloud-based virtual desktop computer.
