When will Stranger Things 5 be released? Season 5 will be the final season of the Netflix series, according to creators Matt and Ross Duffer.

Stranger Things fans, it's official that Stranger Things 5 has been confirmed as the Netflix series' final season.

Season 5 of Stranger Things feels a long way off at this point. The hugely successful sci-fi horror series is getting one last outing before wrapping up. However, while the show's writing team has begun to draught scripts, it will be some time before principal photography begins - and a release date is announced - on the fifth and final season.

Stranger Things Season 5 will be the series' final season. The Duffer Brothers announced the news themselves in an open letter shared with fans alongside Season 4's official poster in February 2022.

"Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things," the duo wrote in their letter. "At the time, we predicted the story would last four or five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you'll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last."
“With nine scripts, over eight hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one,” the Duffer Brothers shared, calling the fourth season “the beginning of the end.” The duo also shared that the decision to split the season in two parts was due to its “unprecedented length” and to get it to fans “as soon as possible.”

Will there be a Stranger Things 5?
Yes there will be a Stranger things season 5/ Stranger things 5 and it will be the final season of Stranger things.

Ross Duffer previously stated in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter: "Season four will not be the last. We know what will happen and when it will happen. [The pandemic] has given us the opportunity to plan ahead and decide what is best for the show. We got a better idea of how long we needed to tell the story once we started filling it out."

It appears that the Duffer brothers are confident in their ability to deliver another iconic season of the show, which is a really good sign given how incredible season 4 was.

When will Stranger Things Season 5 be released?
That depends entirely on when the season begins filming. The Duffer brothers confirmed in August 2022 that they have begun writing season 5. In an interview with British GQ, David Harbour hinted that filming will begin in 2023.

There is currently no word on when season 5 will begin filming, but it should not be as long as the wait for season 4.

The Duffer brothers told Variety, "Don't hold us to it, but the gap should be much shorter this time, because we already have an initial outline, and we can't imagine there will be another six-month forced hiatus."

Fans will most likely have a better idea once production on Season 5 begins.

Will there be a time jump in Stranger Things 5?

Every season of Stranger Things begins with a time jump, as any fan will know. Season 1's timeline jumped from November/December 1983 to October 1984, then to July 1985 in season 2. Season 4 picks up eight months after the Battle of Starcourt, in March 1986.

However, it appears that the Duffer brothers are considering another time jump. According to TVLine, a long gap is almost unavoidable due to the ages of the younger actors: "I'm sure we'll go back in time. We would have preferred to shoot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was simply no way to do so."

What year will Stranger Things 5 be set in?

Stranger Things seasons take place one year apart, but it is unknown whether season 5 will take place in 1987. With the Upside Down spreading quickly in Hawkins and the threat of Vecna becoming very real, how far forward in time will they go?

We'll update this article as soon as we learn more.

If the show continues past March 1988, it may coincide with the release of Beetlejuice, which stars real-life superstar Winona Ryder.

How many episodes will Stranger Things 5 have?

Season 5's length will have to be confirmed, but given that seasons 1 and 3 had 8 episodes each, and seasons 2 and 4 had nine, season 5 will most likely be around the same length. Everything is dependent on how much story the Duffer brothers want to tell in the final season.

Except for the series finale, the episode lengths will most likely be much shorter than those of season 4. The Duffer brothers have stated that the season 5 finale will last "at least two hours," but not as long as the season 4 finale.

Matt Duffer teased that the finale "will be pretty massive" in another interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Will Stranger Things 5 be the final season?

Yes. Stranger Things season 5 will be the show's final season, but it will not mark the end of the Stranger Things universe.

The Duffer brothers said in a statement about the franchise's future and the season 4 release date, "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, and new unexpected heroes."

David Harbour also stated in an interview with Collider that season 4 lays the groundwork for the show's conclusion: "We're introducing new stuff, but we're also tightening and wrapping up in a certain direction." To have a clear, clean, specific, and definite ending at some point, about which I can't really speak."

In a separate interview, producer Shawn Levy told Collider that he and the Duffer brothers have a plan: "There is a plan and that too will be shared not quite as soon as a sense of when season four is coming out, but soon enough."

He went on: "This is something I can say. Nobody is making it up as we go along, and there is a goal in mind, if you will."

What will happen in Stranger Things 5?

We finally know what will happen in season 5 now that the final two episodes of season 4 have been released.

Viewers are now aware of Vecna's history, origins, and connection to Eleven. Season 5 will undoubtedly continue that storyline now that we know he's still looming over Hawkins thanks to Will's senses.

The Duffer brothers teased in an interview with Variety that the remaining mysteries of the Upside Down will be the main focus of season 5, including the significance of the Upside Down being stuck on the date that Will was taken back in 1983.

"We don't actually resolve that this season but it plays that moment where they realise it's frozen in time," they said. "It's a huge part of season 5 and so, we just wanted to just put it out there, and get people talking about it and thinking about it."

Hawkins has been ripped apart by Vecna at the end of Season 4, and it now houses a massive gateway between the real world and the Upside Down. The Upside Down appears to be spreading throughout Hawkins, as evidenced by Eleven's final scene, in which she walks out into the field near Hopper's cabin and finds the grass and flowers dying.

Matt and Ross Duffer teased season 5 on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, revealing that there will be no of the usual character set up we've grown accustomed to over the previous seasons: "It'll be moving - I'm not sure if it'll be going 100 miles per hour at the start of 5, but it'll be moving pretty fast."

Characters will already be in action, and they will have a goal and a drive."

Season 5 will also take place in Hawkins, emulating the atmosphere of season 1 but on a much larger scale.

"It's going to feel a lot larger in scale than season one," the brothers teased. "But we want to go back to a lot of things we did in season one, a lot of original groupings and parings - there's something nice about coming full scale." "It'll feel much bigger than season 1 in terms of stakes and scale, but we want to revisit a lot of things we did in season 1."

Max Mayfield in Stranger Things (Stranger things season 5)
Stranger Things 5: Max Mayfield's coma will be very important to the storyline

Season 5 will most likely investigate what happened to Max. Vecna killed Max in the season 4 finale, but she resurrected and is now in a coma. Eleven appeared to have brought her back to life by using her happy memories, but the season ended before that was explained.

The Duffer brothers have now revealed that Max's coma will be "incredibly relevant" to the season 5 storyline.

"Season 5, and the fact that she's in a coma...I can't really get into the details, but she's important," Matt Duffer teased. "And this will have a significant impact on 5. It is not a 'cheat,' but it is extremely relevant to 5."

Stranger Things 5 cast: Who will return?

Let us begin with some good news. Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Noah Schnapp (Will), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Priya Ferguson (Erica), Joe Keery (Steve), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan), and Maya Hawke are among the returning cast members for Stranger Things 5. (Robin).

Because Max is in a coma, Sadie Sink will most likely return, but in what capacity is unknown. We'll have to see what happens with her storyline.

And, of course, Winona Ryder and David Harbour will reprise their roles as Mom and Dad, a.k.a. Joyce and Hopper, who have (finally) reunited.

Brett Gelman (Murray) and Cara Buono (Karen Wheeler) are both expected to return. While his current whereabouts are unknown, it's possible that we'll see Paul Reiser's Dr. Owens again. Because they didn't die, we could also see Tom Wlaschiha's Dmitri and Nikola uriko's Yuri return.

Anyone who did not die could potentially return in season 5. To be honest, anyone who has died could reappearance in flashbacks or Vecna's visions.

The Duffer brothers have also stated that they are attempting to limit the number of new characters in Season 5. They explained why to IndieWire: "We're doing everything we can to avoid [adding new characters] for Season 5. We're trying not to do that so we can focus on the original characters."

Will Eddie Munson be in Stranger Things 5?

Despite his untimely death in season 4, fans hope to see Joseph Quinn's Eddie Munson return in season 5.

As previously stated, Eddie could appear in flashbacks using footage from Season 4. With Vecna still on the loose, Dustin's traumatic visions could conjure up an undead version of Eddie, similar to Billy in Max's vision. Of course, this is all speculation at the moment.

As for the elaborate theory about Eddie returning as Kas the Bloody Handed? For now, it remains a theory. A good one, but still just a theory.
